A Debt Collector Is Hired by Your Creditor

  • Creditors Try To Scare You With Debt Collectors: If you haven't paid a bill for a few months, Creditors ask other agencies to try and collect your debt.
  • Creditors Sell Your Debt! If your creditor isn't getting payments from you, they may sell the right to collect the debt to a completely different company.

What Can Debt Collectors Do?

  • Debt Collectors Can Send You Letters: Collection Laws regulate what can be said in a collection letter
  • Debt Collectors Can Call You: Collection Laws regulate what can be said during conversations and in voice mail messages
  • Debt Collectors Can Get Information About You: This can include pulling your credit report and in some circumstances calling others to find out about your location.

What Can't Debt Collectors Do?

  • Debt Collectors Cannot Harass You! Debt Collectors are not allowed to lie to you, curse at you, or threaten to do things which are illegal.
  • Debt Collectors Cannot Continue to Contact if you Request that they Cease & Desist: When you ask a Debt Collector to "Cease & Desist" collection activities, they can no longer call or write you.  YOU WILL STILL OWE THE DEBT!
